Prof. Phillip O. Nying’uro

Bio

Professor Phillip Oginga Nying’uro is based at the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, University of Nairobi, Kenya. He earned his bachelor’s and master's degrees in political science from the University of Nairobi and a Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science from the University of South Carolina, United States of America, where he was a Fulbright Scholar.

After completing his master's degree course, Prof. Nyinguro joined the government of the Republic of Kenya as an Assistant Secretary in office of the president and posted to the Ministry of Health where he participated in policy making and policy implementation. He was then transferred to Provincial Administration as a District Officer. As a provincial administrator, his mandates included chairing the District/Divisional development committees that oversaw development policy formation and implementation within the administrative area of jurisdiction.

Prof. Nyinguro has served as a chairman of the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, University of Nairobi (2003-2009 and 2017-2018). He has taught a wide range of courses in the discipline of political science including Theoretical Perspectives of Public Policy and Governance and Public Policy. He has been a consultant and adjunct lecturer at the National Intelligence Academy, Kenya, National Defense College (Kenya), Centre for Conflict Management (University of Rwanda), Rwanda Defense Force and Command Staff College.

Prof. Nyinguro has been an external examiner in various universities including University of Dar-es-Salaam, University of Johannesburg, Moi University, Catholic University and Maseno University (Kenya) and University of Botswana. He has also published several journal articles and book chapters. These include: “The External Sources of the Democratization Process in Kenya” “The Resource Dimension of Conflicts in Sub-Saharan Africa,” “The Impact of the Cold War on U.S-Africa Relations” and “Peace and Security in post-cold war Africa: Safeguarding the Future”.
