Promoting Takaful Weather-Index Insurance for Climate Resilience in Nigeria's Sudano-Sahel

A Policy Brief
An Abstract

Summary

This policy brief is based on findings and recommendations from a study implemented by senior researchers from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, with funding from the former Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Markets, Risk & Resilience at the University of California, Davis, in partnership with the International Centre for Evaluation and Development (ICED), under the Advancing Local Leadership and Innovation Networks (ALL-IN) program. The program aimed to strengthen locally-led research in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The study involved a randomized controlled trial conducted in seven states of Nigeria's Sudano-Sahelian zone (Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, and Yobe) during the 2023-2024 agricultural season. The study engaged 964 millet and sorghum farmers randomly assigned to control, conventional weather-index insurance (WII), or mutual weather-index insurance (MWII) treatment groups. Data were collected through baseline and endline surveys administered by trained enumerators.
