The Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) at the University of Ghana, Legon, organized a one-day dissemination event after the completion of a 3-year (2021-2024) project funded under ICED’s ALL-IN Project. The project titled “Using Digital Communication to Reinforce Nutrition and Household Resilience in Northern Ghana” was led by Prof. Robert Darko Osei, Dean, School of Graduate Studies.

The main intervention of the study involved disseminating water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and nutrition messages to poor households in four administrative regions and 232 communities using interactive voice responses (IVRs). Selected households received voice recorded messages in 11 languages spoken in the project communities over a six-month period. The findings of the study show that digital communication improves behaviour changes such as treating water to make it safe for consumption, cleanliness of surroundings, and washing of hands with soap. Furthermore, the study also found improvement in child nutrition outcomes and self-reported health status. The results imply that low-cost digital technologies could serve as avenue for improving behaviour changes on environmental quality, and health and nutrition outcomes in Northern Ghana.

ISSER organized two events during the dissemination workshop. The first event was held in the morning (10 am-12:30 pm) of Tuesday, 9 July 2024 at the Radach Lodge and Conference Centre (RLCC), Tamale and it involved interaction with over 30 selected respondents/households from the project communities and 10 field data enumerators on the research findings. This program was also used to validate the findings of the study. The second event organized in the afternoon (14-17 pm) at the Modern City Hotel, Tamale was attended by over 40 stakeholders including researchers, practitioners, students, media practitioners, and policy makers working in the health and nutrition sector of Northern Ghana. This event provided the platform in engaging the stakeholders on the research findings. The results were well received by the participants and this positive engagement is expected to lead to the adoption of the findings by the stakeholders to enhance the health and nutrition outcomes in Northern Ghana.
